Valley teams picked up five medals at the 25th anniversary Gunn Baldursson Memorial women’s soccer tournament this past weekend.
Two of the local teams earned gold medals: Kings West Russell in U-16 Tier 2B and
Valley United in U-18 Tier 1. West Hants Cecchetto took silver in U-14 Tier 2B and Valley United earned bronze in the U-12A division.
As well, the Valley was ensured a fifth medal, bronze in colour, in the Ladies Seven- Aside division. Wolfville Paddy’s Ravens and Kentville Wizards met in the bronze medal game, but ended the match with a tie.
In U-16 Tier 2B, Kings West Russell went undefeated en route to the gold medal. In the round robin, Kings West edged Middleton 2-1, topped Upper County United 2-0 and blanked Dartmouth United 3-0.
Kings West then edged West Nova Fuels 2-1 in semifinal action, then doubled West Hants Lake 4-2 in the gold medal game.
In U-18 Tier 1, a division comprised of all Division 1 teams, Valley United opened the round robin with a 3-0 win over Suburban, then edged South Shore 1-0 and topped Saint John 4-0 to finish the round robin at 3-0.
Valley United then topped Saint John again, this time by a 5-0 score, in the semifinals before blanking Suburban 2-0 in the gold medal game. The Valley girls not only didn’t lose a game in the tournament, they didn’t allow the opposition a single goal.
In U-14 Tier 2B, West Hants Cecchetto lost 1-0 in the final to Upper County after going undefeated at 4-0 to that point.
In U-12A, Valley United won all three of its round robin games, 6-1 over Bedford, 5-0 over CS Dieppe and 2-1 over Dartmouth United before dropping a 2-1 decision to Dartmouth United in the semifinals.
Valley United then came back to top Scotia Soccer 5-1 in the bronze medal game.
