Hoop Axemen defeat Cape Breton Capers

The Acadia basketball Axemen got back on the winning track in a big way, using a strong finish to claim a 77-60 win over the Cape Breton Capers Friday in Wolfville.

Acadia led 18-14 after one quarter, 34-28 at halftime and 51-42 after three quarters, but the Capers picked away at the lead, reducing it to one at 58-57 with 4:30 to play. The Axemen responded with a 19-3 run to claim a 17-point victory.

Four Acadia players reached double figures in scoring, with former Auburn Drive teammates A.J. Simmonds and Shaquille Smith leading the way with 17 points each. Simmonds had five of Acadia’s 10 three-pointers, while Smith had two threes along with eight rebounds.

Anthony Sears added 15 points for the Axemen, and Owen Klassen contributed 14 points and a game-high 10 boards. Cedric Kasongo finished with 15 and Sean McCormick 13 for the Capers.

The win improved Acadia’s season record to 9-3 and allowed the Axemen to retain sole possession of first place with 22 points, two up on second-place UNB. Cape Breton dropped to 4-8 on the season.

The Axewomen were not as fortunate in their game earlier in the evening, dropping a 68-50 decision to the Capers.

Cape Breton led 16-13 after one quarter and 24-22 at halftime, then put the game away with a 28-16 third quarter. The Capers also won the fourth quarter 16-12, the final margin of victory matching their largest lead of the game.
