The Avon View Avalanche’s senior girls basketball team has been in a rebuilding mode over the past few seasons. While they always played respectable basketball, they seemingly always came up against strong opponents such as Parkview and Horton.

In sports, you never know when the clock is going to start ticking the other way.  This year, Avon View’s rebuilding efforts are paying off.

The Avalanche knew they had some promising players coming up through the junior high ranks. Those players are now helping to make a difference on the court.

During the final weekend prior to Christmas, the Avalanche received strong performances from newcomers Jessica Miller and Mikayla States. The Avalanche registered two wins; one was a 64-34 cutting up of Parkview, the other was a much closer 54-51 verdict over Yarmouth.

The Avalanche will play Horton at home on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 5:30 p.m. They will face off against Yarmouth in another home game on Jan. 15.

The Avalanche is scheduled to play in a number of tournaments in 2014, including in Amherst/Springhill Jan. 3-4, in New Glasgow Jan. 17-18, at Central Kings Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 and in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Feb. 7-8.

The Western Zone Championships are slated to be held Feb. 14-15.
