Yarmouth City Drug Bantam A Female Mariners 2013-2014 provincial champs.

Both of Yarmouth’s female rep hockey teams were playing for gold in provincial championship games on Sunday, with the Yarmouth City Drug Bantam A Mariners winning the championship with a 2-0 win over Antigonish.

The bantam A game had been scoreless late into the third period before Yarmouth scored to gain the first lead by any team of the game on a goal by Lauren Goudey (Saige Breton). Laura Legere (Angele LeBlanc) scored on the empty net for the Mariners after Antigonish pulled its goalie for the extra attacker. Lindsey Minard was in net for the Mariners.

The Yarmouth Mazda Midget A Female Mariners are bringing home the silver medal from their provincials. The team fell 4-1 to Cumberland County in the championship game.

Both teams had a great run at provincials.

At bantam A provincials, the Yarmouth City Drug Bantam A Mariners also went three for four in the round robin. Their round robin results were:

Antigonish 1 – Yarmouth 0

Yarmouth 2 – Cape Breton West 0

Yarmouth 5 – Pictou 1

Yarmouth 3 – Halifax 2

Players from the Yarmouth Mariners won five skills events in the provincials’ skills competition. Saige Breton won the skating backwards competition, Laura Legere won the shootout, Lindsey Minard was top goalie, Abby Legere won the accuracy shooting skill and Angele LeBlanc won the fastest skater competition.

For the bantam A provincials all-star team, Laura Legere received the tournament MVP award, the award for leading scorer and was named all-star forward. Mariners goalie Lindsey Minard was named all-star goalie of the tournament.

The midget A Mariners finished the round robin with three wins and one loss. Their game results were:

Yarmouth 3 – Colchester 1

Yarmouth 3 – Pictou 2

Yarmouth 3 – Cumberland 2

Eastern Shore 2 – Yarmouth 1

In the midget A provincials skills competition, Melissa Atkinson of the Yarmouth Mariners won for hardest shot. Atkinson was also named tournament MVP. Shayna Heroux of the Mariners was named most defensive player of the tournament. The Mariners’ goalie Maria Gaudet received the award for best goalie at the tournament.
