Down 2-0 at the beginning of the second period, Acadia netted five straight goals to defeat the Saint Mary’s Huskies 5-2  Friday night in Halifax.

Jamie Doornbosh opened the scoring for SMU in the first period – an extra long period thanks to a 45-minute delay to replace a pane of glass – and Francis Menard made it 2-0 early in the second frame.

Joe Gaynor potted the Axemen’s first goal at 4:40 in the second, just 29 seconds after Menard’s marker. The other Acadia goals came from Liam Heelis, Brett Thompson, Travis Randell and Michael Clarke.

Goalie Evan Mosher made 26 saves; SMU’s Anthony Peters stopped 21 shots on the losing side.

The win clinches a bye to the semifinal playoff round for the Axemen, who sit in second place in the conference.

They’re back in action Saturday night, Feb. 8, hosting Dalhousie. Moncton and AUS leaders UNB are in Wolfville next weekend.
