The Acadia hockey Axemen are officially on a roll, but then again, they have been on a roll pretty much all season.
The Axemen were in Antigonish Jan. 11 for a meeting with third-place St. F.X., and left the Keating Millennium Centre with a 2-1 victory, their fifth win in a row.
Travis Randell's even strength goal at 2:33 of the second period, on assists from K.C. Brown and Leo Jenner, stood up as the game-winner.
Michael Clarke opened the scoring for the Axemen with the only goal of the opening period, an even strength marker at 14:50assisted by Joe Gaynor and Dylan Anderson. Jarrod Struthers scored for St. F.X. on the power play at the 17-minute mark of the second to narrow the gap to 2-1.
The third period was scoreless.
Evan Mosher stopped 22 of 23 shots for the win as St. F.X. held a narrow 23-20 edge in shots on goal.
There were only seven minor penalties called in the contest. The X-men had the game's only power play goal.
The win, Acadia's second of the weekend following a 5-1 victory over Saint Mary's Friday in Wolfville, improved Acadia's season record to 15-1-2 for 32 points. Second-place UNB (13-3-1), five points back, is scheduled to play Sunday evening against Moncton.
