Hockey Axemen open 2014 with two road wins

The Acadia Axemen defeated the UPEI Panthers 5-2 Saturday in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey action in Charlottetown.

Mike Cazzola, Dylan Anderson and Dustin Ekelman each scored a goal and set one up in the win. Michael Clarke and Brett Thompson also scored for the Axemen while Chris Owens had two assists and singles went to Leo Jenner, Liam Heelis, Alex Beaton and Joe Gaynor.

Travis McIsaac and Jordan Mayer scored on power plays for the Panthers. Reggie Traccitto had two assists while Matt Maione and Dana Fraser each had one.

Acadia led 2-0 after the first and 2-1 going to the third.

Evan Mosher made 30 saves for the win while Wayne Savage stopped 29 shots in the loss.

Charlottetown was the Axemen's second stop on an away weekend after a 9-1 drubbing of the St. Thomas Tommies in New Brunswick Friday. Heelis had a hat trick in Fredricton with the other six goals tallied by Travis Randell, Ekelman, Cazzola, Jenner and two from Christopher Buonomo.

After Saturday night's game, Acadia improved to a conference-leading 13-1-2 while UPEI fell to 6-6-1.

Acadia hosts St. Mary’s  Friday, Jan. 10, in Wolfville.
