The Valley midget AAA Wildcats solidified their hold on fourth place in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League with a 2-0 victory over Charlie’s Pizza South Shore Mustangs Dec. 19 in Berwick.
The game was scoreless until Valley’s Stone Harnish scored an even-strength goal with 1:22 remaining in the third period.
Harnish added an empty net goal with three seconds left on the clock to round out the scoring. Lukas Kane assisted on both goals.
Roman Bengert turned aside all 37 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Nicholas Dawe stopped 38 of 39 shots in the Mustangs’ goal.
In a well-played game, only six minor penalties were called, four to the Wildcats and two to the Mustangs.
With the win, Valley improved to 14-8 on the season with two shutout losses and three overtime losses for 33 points, four behind third-place Newbridge Gladiators and 13 points ahead of the fifth-place Mustangs.
The Wildcats are next in action Saturday, Dec. 21 against Halifax McDonalds in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Kings Mutual Century Centre in Berwick. Halifax stood second in the NSMMHL with 39 points.
As part of Saturday's game, the Wildcats will be holding a toy drive. County residents are asked to bring an unwrapped toy in its original packaging with them to the game.
