Valley Junior A Wildcats
The hockey Wildcats opened their Junior A era with a win Friday night against the Amherst Ramblers
Kingston’s Grant Janes of Kingston opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 8:25 of the first period. Janes deflected a pass at his own blue line, went in alone on a breakaway and beat Amherst goalie Richard Tingley.
Mike Molloy made it 2-0 midway through the second period when he scored on a power play, with assists from Janes and Kentville's Brady Atwater. Brad Ryckman scored the third Valley goal at 10:13 of the third period.
Ryan Caswell scored on the power play for Amherst's only goal with 4:42 left in the game.
Rookie Blade Mann-Dixon, the Wildcats' first pick in the Maritime Junior Hockey League draft, stopped 17 of 18 shots in the Valley net. Tingley faced 25 shots at the other end, stopping 22 of the 25.
Despite rainy, humid weather outside, the game was played in front of a near-sellout crowd at the Kentville Centennial Arena, including both the midget and bantam Wildcats players who added their support.
The Wildcats are right back in action tonight when they host the Campbellton Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
