Legends of the Toronto Maple Leafs will soon be lacing up and taking to the ice in Liverpool.
The Maple Leafs Alumni are coming to Queens Place Emera Centre on Sept. 27 for an exhibition game. Proceeds from the game are going to the Ladder Truck Fund.
Allan Robar, organizer of the event, says they wanted to look at new ways to raise money for the fire association. He saw how well the alumni games had done in the Appledome in Berwick and the rink in Chester, and figured it would work really well in Queens Place Emera Centre.
The alumni team is made up of former NHL players from the late 1970's to the early 1990's. While their average age is usually in the 50's, Robar says don't let that fool you into thinking it will be slow.
"They can still skate and they can still put on a good show," he says.
The Maple Leafs team roster so far will include players like like Dave "Tiger" Williams, Gary Leeman, Mike Krushelnyski, Tom Fergus, and Glen Anderson. Most of the team is committed, however there are still a few more left to confirm.
Tickets for the game are $25 each. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the game starting at 7 p.m. Seating is first come first serve. During the game 50/50 tickets will be on sale, door prizes giving out, and the bar and canteen will be open.
On top of the regular tickets, the fire association is also selling VIP tickets. The $75 tickets include admission and a meet and greet with the Maple Leafs players from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Community Room of Queens Place. Of the 80 tickets, Robar says they have about half left.
The other tickets being sold are Locker Room Passes. These also include admission, but are for fans to go into the locker rooms during the first and second intermission to meet the players and get autographs. Those tickets are going for $60, and are a little over half way sold.
Of course the alumni need a team to play against, and the fire association has that covered. The opposing team is made up of local and non-local players, with a wide variety of hockey backgrounds including the Quebec Major Junior league, Junior A, major midget and more.
Local players that have signed on so far include John Tutty, Mike Fralic, Mitchell Alexander as goalies, Simeon and Jack Robar, Josh Morash, Jamie Brown, Dwight Wolfe and others.
There is also an interesting twist to the roster, says Robar.
"The other thing we're allowed to do is put three people on their roster."
Instead of just picking three players, they came up with another fundraising idea. Players can bid for a spot on the alumni team, in two separate auctions. The first runs until midnight on Wednesday Sept. 11, while the second goes from Sept. 12 until Sept. 18. Bidding can be done on the Liverpool Fire Department's Facebook Page, or by calling Robar at 356-2061.
The last spot is being filled by a lottery draw. Tickets are being sold for $5 apiece, with 200 tickets in all, with the winner being drawn a week before the event.
Tickets for the game and the lottery draw are available at Brady's, AA Munroe Insurance, Gosbee's sporting goods in Shelburne, J&H Industries and Veinot's Footware.
