There was no way the King’s-Edgehill School’s girls’ hockey team was letting the Birthplace of Hockey championship banner leave Windsor this weekend.
KES recorded five straight wins in the tournament played at the Hants Exhibition Arena Jan. 11-13.
“One of our biggest things is we move the puck really well,” head coach Laura Shearer, a former Dalhousie University Tigers MVP, said.
The team has three Grade 12 players, but a Grade 7 player, Lea Macleod, is one of the top forwards on the roster, Shearer said.
She says the team gels well, and smart playing made it possible for the small group to maintain enough energy to finish the weekend undefeated, with a 7-2 victory in the championship game against Dakota Collegiate, a school in the top of its league in Winnipeg.
Forwards Erica Kelly and Margarita Dorofeeva each had hat tricks in the tournament, which also included teams from Auburn High, North Nova, Prince Andrew, Eastern Shore District High, Northumberland Regional and Barrington.
KES is first in the Valley High School Hockey League standings, boasting a 9-0 record.
