The Acadia hockey Axemen took care of their own business with a 5-1 win over St. F.X. Jan. 16 in Wolfville, but the third-place Axemen were unable to gain ground on the AUBC.
On a rare weeknight that saw all eight teams in the conference in action, Acadia improved to 14-6-1 on the season by dominating the X-men to take a 2-1 lead in the season series.
The Axemen finished with a 42-19 advantage in shots on goal, including 18-1 in the first period, 13-8 in the second and 11-10 in the third.
The AUBC standings after the Jan. 16 games had UNB first at 16-5 for 32 points, Saint Mary’s second at 15-5-1 for 31 and Acadia third at 14-6-1 for 29.
Fourth-place St, F.X., 11-8-2 for 24 points, lost ground with the loss to Acadia, and was just a point ahead of UPEI, fifth at 11-9-1 for 23 points. The Panthers were 5-0 since Christmas with wins over Dal, Acadia, St. F.X., Saint Mary’s and Moncton.
Moncton held down the sixth and final playoff spot with 20 points and an 8-9-4 record. Dalhousie (6-12-3) was seventh with 15 points and St. Thomas eighth with a 3-17-1 record and seven points.
The Axemen will be back in action this past weekend with a pair of road games, Friday at Saint Mary’s and Saturday at Dalhousie.
Acadia’s next home action is Jan. 25 against Moncton and Jan. 26 against St. Thomas.
