The winning team of the 2014 Victor Rodney Classic - Derek Boudreau, Matt Fish, Colin Murphy and Sam Boudreau,

MUSINGS FROM THE GOLF COURSE: BY ALAIN MEUSE

Unlike last year, the weather gods were kind on the weekend of July 11-13, which parlayed into very successful events at the Yarmouth Links .

First it was the Jody Shelley Golf Fore Health fundraiser for the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. This was the second year this event has been played at the local club and it was a success from every angle.

Thirty-six teams competed but in the end Dr. Paul Legere’s foursome was the top dog. This group also won the event last year. The Grant Thornton team came second and the Comeau Seafoods entry placed third.

Big prize winners in the raffle were:  Sharon Fraser, who won a trip for two to Columbus, Ohio, to see the NHL all-star game next winter. One of my golf partners,  Wayne Petite, won a golf package for two to the Rodd’s Crowbush facility in PEI and Gerry Verran was the winner of a golf package pour deux at the Digby Pines.

The event raised $36,700, bringing the total for past 10 years to $325,000.

Funds raised this year will go toward a new CT scanner and Phase II of the medication management system for the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

The organizers would like to thank the teams, sponsors, volunteers and the Yarmouth Golf & Country Club for their participation.

Following the Jody Shelley event, the Vic Rodney Classic took place July 12-13.

This is one of the highlights at the local club and again perfect weather and a huge turnout made for an exciting event.

Derek Boudreau’s team won the event but they needed a playoff.  Sam Boudreau, Matt Fish and Colin Murphy made up the rest of the team.

Placing second were Kent Devine, Jordy and Andre Atkinson and Darrell Mackenzie.

Stephane LeBlanc, Anthony LeBlanc, Jacques and Marc Lombard finished third.

In the 2nd division, winnners were Dustin Goreham, Brent Symonds, Nathan Townsend and Colby Nickerson. Coming in second were Elliott Fevens, Kyle Boudreau, Andrew Mood and Blake Trask.

Finishing third in this division were Sean Kenney, Jamie and Jeff Kenney and Dwayne Landry.

In the 3rd division, the winning foursome consisted of Robbie Hubbard, Dana Boudreau, Al LeBlanc and Robert d’Entremont.

Placing second were Kevin Penney, Mitch Penney, Cal Kent and Randy Scoville.

Finishing third were Shayne Pottie, Brian and Matt Wood and Philip d’Entremont.

Fourth division winners were Chris, Kelvin, Gene and Gordie Deviller.  Placing second in this division were Adam Kenney, Kempton Goodwin, Stefan Newell and John Greenwood. Rounding out this division and placing third were Ray Smith, Michael and Don Cain and Chuck Sisco.

This was the 20th year this event has taken place and during that time only one team has stayed intact. This is the foursome of Garth Nickerson, Don Berry, George Doucet and Randy Fells.

SHORT PUTTS---Since the two tournaments played host to a number of visiting golfers and the weather was ideal, it did make a positive impression, especially when the ferry Nova Star gently glided up Yarmouth harbour, clearly visible from a number of fairways on the wide-open course, especially on No. 1 and the greens on 5 and 7. Despite the lack of rain this month the greens—as always–were nigh near perfect. A good job done by the grounds crew…He Said It.

“Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it’s called golf.”—Will Rogers.
