The football Axemen dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 26-14 home field loss on Sept. 14 against top-ranked Laval.
Reigning AUFC Rookie of the Year Thomas Troop had both Acadia touchdowns, one on an 18-yard run late in the first half and the other on a one-yard plunge late in the second half. Troop ended up with 94 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Laval, which improved to 3-0 with the win, had 388 yards of total offence to Acadia’s 240, but was penalized for 136 yards to just 77 for the Axemen.
Axemen quarterback Evan Brown was 23-38 for 154 yards and one interception.
Acadia head coach Jeff Cummins was generally pleased with the effort, even though the final score wasn’t exactly what he was looking for from his team.
“I just want to keep growing, game in and game out until the end of the season so we are playing our best football by week eight,” Cummins said.
“We’re not where we want to be. I’m not happy with the loss, and I don’t get gratification from a moral victory. We were better today, and I can be happy with that, but the bottom line is that we’re 0-2.”
The Axemen are next in action Sept. 20, when they travel to Antigonish for a 7 p.m. start against the X-men. After a 19-15 exhibition loss to Acadia, St. F.X. opened the regular season with two straight victories, 31-10 over Mount Allison in week one and 35-18 over Concordia in week two.
