While the Avon View High School Avalanche football team got off to a terrific start before slumping at the end of the season and losing their playoff opener, one could not take away the exceptional season demonstrated and played by three of the Avalanche starters.
Their ability was demonstrated time and time again on the playing field and it was noticed when it came time to select the first and second Nova Scotia Division All-Star teams for 2011.
In 2010, the Avalanche's linebacker A.J. Whitehead was honoured for his outstanding athletic prowess during the Jr. High School Athletic Awards. This year, he showed who was boss on the offensive line when the Avalanche took to the field.
Whitehead was exceptional, making tackle after tackle and was named one of four linebackers to the first team defensive unit of the 2011 NSSAF All-Star team.
As for offence, the Avalanche's Russ Lavergne was one of four receivers named to the second all-star team. He made some very memorable catches, week in and week out. Watching him, it was easy to understand why the Avalanche were able to put up the offensive reception numbers they were able to post during the 2011 season.
When it comes to posting offensive points, it is important that you are protecting your rushers and wide receivers, and more importantly, your quarterbacks. The Avalanche's Dan Snow was ferocious on the offensive line and was one of five named to the second division all-star team.
The 2011 season was a considerable upgrade from 2010 and all eyes will be on AVHS come 2012.
