The Junior Mariners basketball team from Digby Regional High School placed last in a tournament in Lunenburg last weekend, players gained valuable experience playing against two stronger teams.

The Mariners squad played its best basketball against the North Queens Spartans in their first game of the day.

The Spartans led the Mariners 30-10 at the half but Digby got its game together and played a stronger offensive second half, outscoring their opponents 32-22.

Final score was 52-41 for the Spartans. Brandon Melanson led the Mariners with 12 points and Anthony Hakim added 11. Melanson was named player of the game.

The Mariners went up against a tough Lunenburg team in the team’s second game of the tournament, falling 52-28 to the Center Breakers.

Anthony Hakim scored 10 points for the Mariners and Aaron Titus and Dustin Howard each scored six. Drew Sabean was named Digby’s player of the game.

The Mariners are scheduled to play Wednesday, Jan. 16, at St. Mary’s Bay Academy.
