The West Hants Thunder struggled to make key plays during the 2014 Eastern Canadians Under-14 Peewee Fastpitch Softball Championship Tournament in St. Croix recently.

The team finished 0-3 in the preliminary round-robin portion of the tournament but won their opening play-off game 7-4 over the Fredericton Twins.

In the victory over Fredericton, Hayden Burgess connected for a pair of base hits while scoring two runs, while Jayce Phillips collected three singles and scored another run. Colton MacCarthy also collected two base hits and Will Caines garnered a triple. Nathan Landry pitched the win for the Thunder, giving up single runs in the second, third, fourth and seventh innings.

The team lost all of the remaining games they played.

The Colchester Royals won the championship with a pair of heart-stopping victories over Tavistock, Ontario and Kitchener-Waterloo, O.N. on Aug. 24 by scores of 4-2 and 6-4.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Paul Phillips, the tournament chairperson, said he was confident the team will learn from the experience and “will be ready for a strong 2015 season."
