After juggling practices and games for two baseball teams this summer, Makayla Addington has her sights set on the season’s finale.

Addington plays catcher and first baseman for the Weymouth Firebirds and is the only player from south west Nova Scotia on the 16U Girls Provincial Selects.

She is off to Saguenay, Quebec on Tuesday to represent Nova Scotia (and all of the Maritimes) at the Baseball Canada 16U Girls Invitational Championship.

“Nationals are what we have all been looking forward to all season and I am really excited,” said Addington. “We’ve been practicing and playing lots of baseball to prepare for nationals and now it is finally here.”

The Provincial Selects are the only Maritime team at Nationals and will play round robin against Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec 2 and Saskatchewan in Pool A.

Their first game is against Ontario at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.

“Ontario is usually a really strong team and hopefully we play well enough to pull out that first win,” said Addington.

Addington feels her new and improved baseball skills will help her team at Nationals.

“Playing on the provincial team has improved my batting skills and I have learned how to play leftfield,” Addington said. “I can cover a lot of ground quickly so I feel I can help my team win by being a strong player in the outfield.”

Most right handed batters tend to hit the ball to the left field so it is important to be sharp and quick she added.

Miranda Addington, Makayla’s mother said the trip will be a good learning experience for her daughter as well as for herself as this is the first time the young athlete has gone away to play ball without her parents coming along.

Her mother and father will both be busy at home as the Weymouth Firebirds are hosting Provincials at the Weymouth Cricket Field on Aug. 24.

Makayla Addington says she while she is disappointed to be missing Provincials with the Firebirds, the best part of the season will be the chance to play at Nationals.

The 16U Girls Provincial Selects leaves Halifax early Tuesday morning with round robin match ups beginning Thursday and concluding with the gold medal game Sunday night.
