Wrestler Turk Celik, seen here with Hulk Hogan, has put together a live pro wrestling show for Sunday in Freeport.
Turk Celik, one of the bright stars on the North American independent professional wrestling scene, knows a thing or two about turning dreams and visions into realities.
After being asked by a local elected official last year during a ferry crossing to hold a wrestling show on Long and Brier islands, Celik accepted the challenge. The show will unfold Sunday, Aug. 31, when Freeport hosts the first Island Mania.
More than a live professional wrestling show, Island Mania will also feature a body slam challenge, great local food, many activities and live music. It’s all for a good cause, as proceeds will benefit the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department.
Celik said preparations included cleaning up a portion of shoreline for use by fans and converting old concrete basements into VIP table areas.
“The freshly cut and painted fan area will permanently upgrade the Freeport shoreline, as discussed in a town hall meeting last week,” Celik said.
Two bands are booked—the Margie Brown Duo at noon and Hour Glass at 3 p.m.—and will perform on a stage built at Lavena’s Catch restaurant.
The wrestling goes down at 11 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. on the wharf, with the body slam challenge happening mid-afternoon, around 2:30 p.m. Municipal councilor David Tudor is scheduled to serve as special guest ring announcer for the body slam challenge.
Other activities include yoga to live whale sounds via hydrophone and a reflexologist to help visitors relax. As part of fundraising aspects, there will be a VIP seating auction and a 50-50 draw.
Celik said there is a desire by many of the volunteers involved to have an Island Day next year as part of the Wharf Rat Rally in Digby. He said the goal isn’t to compete with Digby but to work in partnership in order to amplify the Rally further.
Celik might be familiar to some from appearances on OLN’s Mantracker and CBC’s Dragon Den. Some of his wrestling accolades include successful stints with major league developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling and the ‘Hulkamania World Tour’.
Some of the other wrestlers involved include maritime stars Forrest Cullen, a native of Digby, and Sidewalk Sam and long-time ring announcer ‘Captain’ Kirk Starratt.
