Traffic was heavy along Main Street in Weymouth on Saturday morning and early afternoon as dozens of ATVs headed into the village from both sides of the Sissiboo River for Appreciation Day.

Mid Valley, Annapolis and Sou’West ATV clubs joined the Digby County club with over 80 machines and many more riders from as far as Wedgeport to Berwick taking part in the first annual event.

Organizer Kevin Lombard of the Digby County ATV Club said the purpose of the Appreciation Day was just that, to show the clubs’ appreciation to the village of Weymouth.

He said over $2,000 was spent in the village, and $500 was raised for the Jared Mitchell benefit.

“A big thanks goes out to Fred American who donated his 50/50 winnings of $179 to the benefit,”added Lombard.

Bikers and their rides parked behind Weymouth Mercantile where they registered and took part in the 50/50 draws and prizes.

Riders took advantage of the discounts local businesses offered while in the village.

It's great to see the ‘can do' attitude alive and well in our area. Businessman Larry Haight

ATV trails on both sides of the Sissiboo River meet up in Weymouth but there is a break in the trail and bikers were permitted to use the shoulders of the main highway for this special event.

Lombard said he would be making a presentation to Digby municipal council on Monday, seeking its assistance in asking the government for year round usage of the shoulder of the road through the village to access the trails.

Local businessman Larry Haight said the event was good for the village.

“As a member of the Weymouth Board of Trade, I'd like to say thanks to everyone that participated,” said Haight. “It's great to see the ‘can do' attitude alive and well in our area.”

Lombard thanked each of the clubs, their presidents and members for helping make the day a great success.

The event concluded with riders heading out on a run before heading home.
