Avon View's senior girls' rugby team is hoping provincials will be the cherry on the top of their already impressive season.

The Windsor-based team went into their regional final against the neighbouring King's-Edgehill School (KES) with a record of 12-0.

In regular season play the girls allowed only 22 points against, but scored more than 300 points.

That said, Avon View knew they'd have their work cut out for them in challenging KES for the regional banner May 29.

“We knew that we could not just relax, throw our cleats on the field and KES would roll over and let us win,” said coach Jim Bryan.

They were right. It was clear from the onset of the final that both teams were in it to win it.

KES coach Rory Campbell asked his girls to “play perfectly.” He urged each player to do her best, and the girls heard their coach loud and clear.

Avon View held a 12-point lead at half, but KES closed that gap.

“KES came out intense as ever this year giving us all we could handle, making it 22-19 at one point,” said Bryan.

KES nearly made it over Avon View's goal line to clinch the lead, but a strong defensive recovery from Avon View lead to an offensive surge that resulted in the last try of the 27-19 game.

Avon View's Jaclyn Silver had two tries, while Brittany MacKinnon, Leah Harris-Shanks and Colleen Lothian recorded one each. Katie Giles scored the lone convert.

The next stop for Avon View is provincials the weekend of June 6 and they're ready.

“The Valley league is very strong, which is a great thing. Whoever gets to make it to provincials is very prepared with many meaningful, close, intense games,” said Bryan.

“It was too bad two teams did not get to advance from the Valley this year because both second-place teams would have been competitive there.”

There will be six teams at the North Nova Education Centre for provincials — two from the city, two from the host area, one from Cape Breton and one from the Valley. Avon View must secure four wins to return home with the championship banner.
