Digby area athletes off to track provincials

Five students from Digby area schools have won a spot at the provincial track and field meet.

Brett Allbright of Islands Consolidated School won two silvers at the track and field regionals in Wolfville on Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31.

He had the second best junior discus throw of 31.36 metres, just ahead of teammate Matthew Thurber, who came third with a distance of 30.32 metres.

Allbright also finished second in the junior boys 100 metre dash with a time of12.27.

Jordan Sullivan of Digby Regional High School came third in that event with a time of 12.32.

Sullivan was second in the 200 metre dash in 25.23.

Melanie Gunn of DRHS won third in the junior girls discus with a distance of 20.10 metres.

Brandon Sullivan of Saint Mary’s Bay finished second in the intermediate boys javelin with a distance of 42.85 metres.

DRHS had 26 students competing at regionals in 59 individual events and three relays.

The junior girls 4x100 metre finished fifth.

SMBA had six students compete in 14 individual events and one relay.

Islands Consolidated had 11 students compete in 21 individual events and two relays.

All five students have won a spot at the Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation track and field provincials at the Cape Breton University in Sydney on Friday June 6 and Saturday, June 7.
