Southwest Thunder won the silver medal at Atlantic Hockey Group Peewee Minor Nova Scotia Cup, which was held at the Halifax Forum May 23-25.

The team – made up of players from Yarmouth County, Clare and Shelburne, Queens and Lunenburg counties and the Annapolis Valley – was the only team among the seven teams at the tournament to go undefeated in the round robin.

Thunder’s scores were:

Southwest Thunder 4 – Saint John Screaming Eagles 1

Southwest Thunder 2 – Central NS Lightning 0

Southwest Thunder 5 – Western NS Hurricanes 1

Southwest Thunder 5 – Cape Breton Freeze 3

In the championship game Thunder played the Cougars of Quebec. The Cougars were the first to score on a 5-on-3 powerplay advantage in the first period. Thunder tied it up on a goal by Ethan Doucette and later went up 2-1 in the second period on a goal by Cameron Lohnes. The Cougars knotted the score at 2-2 before the period ended and then took the 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

Thunder evened the score 3-3 on a goal by Max Longmire, but the Cougars scored on a hard shot from the blue line through traffic to tak3 the 4-3 lead. With 1:15 left in the game the Cougars scored again. The final score was 6-3 when the Cougars scored on Thunder’s empty net with seven seconds left in the game.

This wrapped up the spring season for Southwest Thunder, which had also won a silver medal at a tournament in Portland, Maine last month. The team also competed at a tournament in Moncton.
