The women’s hockey tournament; Hot On The Ice is back for a second year this May.
The Liverpool Lady Cougars gathered for a photo after placing 3rd in the Truro Pink Ribbon Tournament. The team is hosting their second annual women’s hockey tournament on the May 23 weekend.
Last year the Liverpool Lady Cougars hosted their first tournament, bringing in women’s teams from across the province.
“We really had no idea what to expect because it was our first kick at the can, so when we put out the call for teams last year and had seven plus our own we were absolutely thrilled,” says Diane Tingley-Hopper, coach of the Liverpool Lady Cougars.
This year nine teams are coming, some as far away as Cape Breton.
The tournament focuses on C level hockey and includes newer players. Tingley-Hopper says most teams that played last year, were around the same level with a few being a bit stronger. Last year’s tournament was won by the Lunenburg team.
The Lady Cougars will also hold a silent auction during the tournament to raise money for development sessions for players. Tingley-Hopper says their ice time mostly consists of scrimmage and although that is a learning experience, she says many would benefit from a session based on developing skills and techniques.
“We’re hoping to get these development sessions not just for women but we’ve also got some teenage girls coming out so we’re trying really hard to have some opportunities where they can come out and learn to play,” says Tingley-Hopper.
Tingley-Hopper hopes the tournament gets a few spectators. She says it’s important for the promotion of women’s hockey and to show people they can start at any age.
“When we get people out to see us play and see how much fun we have, that just makes us feel like it’s more than just for ourselves, it’s for everybody,” says Tingley-Hopper.
The tournament starts May 23 and ends May 25. Games are at Queens Place Emera Centre and are free for the public to watch. A full schedule will be released at a later date.
