It has been a successful first year for the Shelburne County Basketball Association.

Three countywide teams just went to the provincial championships.  The Mini boys ages 12 and under took home the win and the mini girls were able to place 4th overall.

The Bantam boys 14 and under missed the playoffs by six points and striking a three and one in the provincials.

“They did great,” said Ed Trevors one of the people involved in forming the association.

The numbers of players for a first year reached 70 participants and Trevors is hoping it will grow even more next year.

“We did have growing pains,” he said.  “We needed to learn how to grow an association.  We can now take what we’ve learned and apply it to next year.”

He recalled one of the big successes of the first year when playing one of the first house leagues between Shelburne and Lockeport.

Only one set of bleachers would work and so fans from both teams piled in together.  Trevors said the parents went crazy equally cheering for all the kids no matter whose team was whose.

The youngest players, grades 2, 3 and 4 will be playing a tournament in Barrington on April 12.

Trevors likes how the refs act as coaches as well enabling the kids to learn how to play the game.

“We want to encourage kids,” said Trevors.  “Not put on so much pressure they learn to hate the game.”

He said the association is building the fundamental skills of the game and will hopefully, in the process, build up the youth.

“Our overall objective is not to be better basketball players,” he said.  “It is to help fall in love with the game and build them up as people.”

He is hoping more volunteers could come and lend a hand with the association for next season.
