It was a silver day for Annapolis West Education Center Wolfpack and a fourth place finish for St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays in Division 3 boy’s hoop provincials.
AWEC’s run for the title fell short losing to the East Antigonish Mustangs 82-70 in the championship finals while SMBA lost to Hants North 83-56 in the bronze medal game in Port Hawkesbury on Saturday, March 1.
The AWEC Wolfpack trailed the Mustangs 33-32 at the half and although AWEC tied it up at 70 with fewer than two minutes to play that was all the offence they could muster.
The #2 Wolfpack advanced to the gold medal game with a 94-62 quarter final win over #7 Carrefour and a semi-final 70-50 victory over #3 Hants North.
East Antigonish defeated #8 Par-En-Bas 87-68 in the quarterfinals and edged out #4 SMBA 77-72 in the semi-finals.
Both SMBA and Hants North won their opening round matches with wins against #5 Bridgewater and #6 SAERC respectively.
SMBA’s beat Bridgewater 66-61 Thursday thanks to a strong first half. Shayne Clements and Byron Mullen poured in 20 points each while Toby Stone scored 11 against the Vikings.
In the Stingrays semi-final game against the Mustangs on Friday night, SMBA jumped out to an early 24-10 first quarter lead and were ahead 41-28 at the half.
Coach Brad Bright said his team could not maintain their momentum in the second half and struggled to contain Kendall Breen who scored 37 points for the Mustangs.
Mullen scored 21 for the Stingrays, Clements finished with 20 and Garrett Nesbitt had 15 including three treys in the loss to East Antigonish.
In the bronze medal match Hants North and SMBA played a close first half with the Flames out front 39-32.
Hants North won the third quarter 20-17 and finished 28-21 in the fourth to claim the bronze.
The Flames were very strong on the three-point line nailing 15 treys to SMBA’s three.
Clements scored 22 points for the Stingrays, Toby Stone added 10, Mullen had 9, Nesbit netted 8 and Jacob Gavel chipped in 5.
Host SAERC defeated Bridgewater 75-43 in the fight for seventh place and Par-En-Bas upset Carrefour 79-71 to finish fifth.
