Maple Grove Panthers win regionals with OT win

The Maple Grove Panthers girls’ basketball team are the tier 1 Western Region junior high regional champions after winning the title in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

After winning districts the previous week, Maple Grove hosted regionals, in which four teams competed: Maple Grove, Bayview, Middleton and West Hants.

In the host team’s first game, Maple Grove played the West Hants Sabers. Maple Grove needed a win to advance to the championship game. The Panthers’ Sydney Barr scored a three point shot with just a few seconds remaining in the game to give Maple Grove the 30-29 win.

Top scorers for Maple Grove in that game were Andrea Oguntade with eight points and Sophie Atkinson with six points.

In the other morning game, the Bayview Bobcats defeated the Middleton Monarchs 53-36.

West Hants and Middleton faced off in the consolation game, with West Hants winning by a score of 36-18.

The championship game saw a pairing between Maple Grove and Bayview with the score tied 41-41 at the end of regulation play.

A five-minute overtime period was played with Maple Grove winning the game 54-50 to become the Tier One Region junior high girls regional champions.

The top scorers for Maple Grove were Sophie Atkinson with 27 points. Sydney Barr and Hannah Saulnier each had eight points. 

Maple Grove finished the season with 19 wins and one loss in tournament and league games. The Maple Grove team was made up of players in Grades 7 and 8 playing against teams with Grade 7, 8 and 9 players.

At the junior high level, regionals is the highest level of competition that teams can advance to.
