Wildcats win 6-3, lose 3-2 in Port Hood
The Valley midget AAA Wildcats sat comfortably in fourth place in the major midget standings after the first two games of 2014.
The Wildcats split a pair of games with the Cape Breton West Islanders in Port Hood: winning 6-3 Jan. 4 and dropping a 3-2 decision Jan. 5.
In the first game, the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period on even-strength goals by Alex Rawding and Ryan Parker and a power play marker by Michael Dill. After Matthew Morgan got Cape Breton West on the board with a power play goal seven minutes into the second, Cody Burghardt restored the three-goal cushion with an unassisted goal before the period was out.
The teams then split four third period goals, with Bradley Boone and Mitch Rankin scoring for the Wildcats; Donovan Rehill and Axel Poirier replied for the Islanders.
Final shots were 38-33 in favour of Valley, with Roman Bengert handling the goaltending chores for the Wildcats.
The following day, Stone Harnish got Valley on the board at 5:44 of the second period, but Declan Smith tied the score on the power play before the period was out.
Alex Bonaparte and Smith then struck for the Islanders in the third period for a 3-1 Cape Breton West lead. Brett Tidman’s power play goal with 19 seconds left in the second period made it 3-2, but Valley could get no closer.
The Wildcats finished with a 49-33 edge in shots on goal. Daniel Liengme was solid in the Islanders’ goal; Michael Pettet stopped 30 of 33 for the Wildcats.
