St. Mary’s Bay Academy senior boys’ basketball team topped the visiting Digby Mariners 91-79 for their first league win of the season Monday night.

The Stingrays jumped out to a 22-9 first quarter lead but the DRHS Mariners found their rhythm in the second, outscoring SMBA 19-14.

Tyrice Miller kept the Mariners in the game with three treys in the third while Shayne Clements and Byron Mullen netted 11 points apiece to pace the Stingrays for a 31-26 lead.

SMBA edged the visitors 23-22 in the final frame for the win.

While both teams shot well and played a tough physical match, the Mariners had difficulty stopping Stingrays point guard Toby Stone as he drove to the basket and executed good bounce passes.

SMBA coach Brad Bright said it was a very upbeat game but his team could have done much better than the five of 18 from the foul line.

“The boys played very well first and third quarters and held off the Mariners’ late rally,” said Bright. “The two teams were a good match-up and the return game will be an interesting one.”

Shayne Clements scored a game high 31 points for SMBA, while Byron Mullen netted 23 and Toby Stone finished with 19. Jacob Gavel chipped in 12 points for the win.

Tyrice Miller led the Mariners with 23 points, Daniel Ford and Ryan Doucette added 15 each and Matthew Hakim scored 13.
