Basketball used to have a strong presence in Queens County, and the new coach of the boys basketball team hopes to bring that back

Gerry Faber took on the role of coach for the Liverpool Regional High School basketball team this year, and is focusing on getting the team ready for league play. Perhaps more importantly though he hopes to develop the players year after year during their time at the High School to build a stronger team.

With the addition of Grade 9 to the school this year, it also opens up more opportunity to draw in players and develop them over their four years in high school.

This year the team has 15 players from Grade 9 through Grade 12, three of them being international students.

The Warriors play in Division 3 basketball which is comprised of two sections; six teams along the South Shore and four teams from the Annapolis Valley. Each section plays at least two games against each other, one home and one away, and the top three teams from each section go on to regionals.

Right now the league is in pre-season, so games are meant more to get the teams used to working with each other. The league games start Dec. 12, with the bulk of them taking place in the new year.

Faber says they have a good group of players as well, that are very dedicated players. They don't have the height some other teams may have, but to make up for it they are concentrating on speed and defense

"They're working very hard, and it’s easier to take a team working hard and teach them skills than to teach them to work hard," says Faber.

Faber is also hoping to rebuild an audience for basketball in Queens County.

He cites the 1980's and 1990's, when basketball was a huge pastime in Queens, which culminated in a major tournament bringing basketball teams from all over the Maritimes to Liverpool. Faber says he would like to see the basketball program brought back up to that level.

"Liverpool has a fantastic basketball tradition," he says. "I want basketball to be something again."

Faber says he hopes to start drawing more people to watch the games again, and to put a team on the floor that brings people out.
