Athletes with the Digby Karate Club picked up nine medals at the Digby grand prix last weekend.

Derian Sabean took gold in individual kata for eight to nine year olds, and bronze in team kata with Owen Wood and Lucas Walker.

Owen Wood also had a bronze in individual kata for 10 to 12 year olds and a bronze in sparring.

More than 135 athletes from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI competed at Digby’s grand prix, the David Akutagawa Commemorative Karate Championship, at DRHS on Saturday, Nov. 23.

The competition attracted athetes who compete at the provincial-national and international levels, said Christian Thibaudeau of the Digby Karate Club.

“The members from Digby Karate Club did very well representing our community and earned the respect of other athletes,” said Thibaudeau. “I was extremely proud of their performance on Saturday. As a community, it is important that we give our support to these athletes.”

Individual Katas:

Derian Sabean (8-9 Years Old) - Gold

Aileen Addington (15-16 Years Old) – Silver

Willow Walker (10-12 Years Old) - Silver Owen Wood (10-12 Years Old) – Bronze

Lucas Walker (10-12 Years Old) - Fourth

Team Kata:

Derian Sabean, Owen Wood & Lucas Walker - Bronze

Sparring:

Owen Wood (10-11 Years Old) – Bronze

Noah VanTassell (12-13 Years Old) – Bronze
