Rugby Axewomen, soccer Axemen nationally ranked
Acadia swept the Atlantic University Sport Subway Athlete of the Week awards for the week ending Sept. 8.
Rachel Chapman of the Axewomen rugby team was named Female Athlete of the Week and Cochrane Noseworthy-Smith of the Axemen soccer team was the choice for Male Athlete of the Week.
Chapman, a second-year centre from Halifax, scored a pair of tries and was named player of the game when the Axewomen shocked top-ranked St. F.X. 44-13 Sept. 6 in the regular season opener for both teams.
Noseworthy-Smith, a third-year midfielder from Wolfville, had the game-winning goal in a 3-1 Acadia Sept. 6 win over Mount Allison. He then added the game-winner and only goal in a 1-0 Axemen victory over Cape Breton Sept. 8, also in Wolfville.
His role in helping his team to a 2-0 start to the season also earned Noseworthy-Smith recognition as the CIS Male Athlete of the Week for the same period.
Their positive starts also allowed both the rugby Axewomen and soccer Axemen to earn places in their respective CIS top-10s.
The Axewomen, ranked 1th in the season-opening rankings, moved up to fifth courtesy of their victory over the X-women.
Their win over the ninth-ranked Capers earned the Axemen their own berth in the national top-10 at the eighth spot.
