More than 138 young curlers gathered at the Glooscap Curling Club on Jan. 19-20 for the third annual Earl MacKinnon Classic Funspiel, which featured play for both boys and girls in U-12 and U-14 divisions.
Earl MacKinnon was involved with junior curling in the Kentville area for many years and dedicated many hours to improving the lives of others through his efforts.
Three years ago, the Glooscap Curling Club started an annual youth funspiel in his name in recognition of all his work on behalf of junior curling.
This year’s event brought together young curlers and their families from Yarmouth, Bridgewater, Chester, Liverpool, Lunenburg, Dartmouth, Halifax, Middleton, Berwick and five teams from the host club.
Team Meagher from Chester were the U-14 champions, with Team Dunn from Lakeshore in Lower Sackville claiming the runner-up position.
In the U-14 consolation, Team MacArthur from Bridgewater were the champions, with Team Reeves from Berwick the runners-up.
In the U-12 division, Team Moore from Mayflower in Halifax were the champions, with the Glooscap team, skipped by Clara Mosher, the runner-up.
The Glooscap team, skipped by Andrew Johnson, captured the U-12 consolation championship, with Team Nodding from Bridgewater the runners-up.
As part of the tournament, the man of the year award was presented to Don Saunders in recognition of his outstanding volunteer commitment to junior curling.
