Just seven months after arson destroyed the Windsor Curling Club’s rink, the group has a plan in action for rebuilding.

Club members hope to be on the ice in a brand-new, four-sheet rink on their Albert Street property for the 2008-09 curling season. The new facility will cost around $2 million and groundbreaking is expected to occur in May or June.

Members gathered at the Windsor Legion April 23 to hear their executive’s proposal for new construction.

Representatives of the executive’s recommended contractor, J.W. Lindsay, were on hand to describe their plans.

Bob Langdon reported on the planning committee’s process; Greg Gollan outlined the refrigeration and heat-recovery systems; and Kevin Matheson spoke on the club’s financial situation and filled in the details.

After the discussion, a motion to award J.W. Lindsay Enterprises Ltd. the contract passed unanimously.

The Club received a hefty grant from the provincial government in March -- a $900,000 B-FIT grant -- but additional fund raising is necessary to see the rink finished.

The membership gave Bob Langdon and the planning committee a standing ovation for their impressive efforts.

Club president Rae Winkelaar extended thanks on behalf of the club to all who have contributed to this project, so far, “through both words of encouragement and financial assistance.”
