Letter to The Hants Journal

To the Editor:

Re: Article regarding a Nova Scotia girl not allowed to participate in an all-boys hiking and fishing day camp.

As a consequence of a story, which took place in West Hants, a municipality adjacent to the Town of Windsor, Nova Scotia, we in Windsor have received scores of e-mails lambasting our town and our recreation department for a situation that has nothing whatsoever to do with Windsor. Some TV networks have even gone so far as to identify West Hants municipal councillors as Windsor town councillors.

This misrepresentation in the media (not The Hants Journal) has led to the Town of Windsor being subjected to cruel and misdirected criticism, a matter of some considerable significance to us.

Such damage to a Town's reputation is incalculable, and for all this to occur simply because a reporter did not bother to check the basic facts is especially unfair. The media should always pay attention to the five W's of journalism: who, what, when, why and especially where.

For the record, the Town of Windsor is enormously proud of our recreation department, our recreation staff, and especially how they consistently come up with new, inclusive and engaging programs to meet the needs of all our citizens, male or female, infant or senior, and everyone in-between.

Thank you for this opportunity to set the record straight.

Louis Coutinho

Chief Administrative Officer

Town of Windsor
