There was a hero’s welcome for the Lockeport Greenwave senior boys soccer team on Nov. 1 when they returned home the provincial division 4 soccer champions.

Led by a fire truck, the team paraded through town, followed by at least 25 vehicles flashing their lights and honking their horns. Residents waved from their doorsteps and flickered their porch lights, while one street was lined with sparklers and supporters.

This is the second NSSAF provincial soccer banner for the Greenwave in four seasons. After winning the division 4 regional championship last month, Lockeport began their quest for the provincial banner in provincial qualifier action, where they took out Inverness 4-1, advancing to the provincials in Pugwash.

The Greenwave edged the host team 3-2 in their opening match of the single elimination tournament, advancing to the title game against Oxford. Patrick Meagher posted a pair of markers for Lockeport, with a single from Ethan Harlow.

There was no looking back in the championship game, with Lockeport downing Oxford 7-2. Birthday boy Patrick Meagher was on the mark for the Greenwave, racking up four goals. Ethan Harlow added two, with one from Cody Murphy.

The team was honored Monday by the school with an assembly in the gym and the official banner hanging. “We won as a team,” said Coach Rob Harlow, who called all the players ‘all-stars’. “With their kick and run style they were able to control the ball in conditions the other teams couldn’t,” said Harlow, who has been coaching the Greenwave for three years. “They stuck it out and showed true character.”

The Greenwave finish the season with a 15-5 record.

This marks the fourth senior boys’ soccer title in the history of the school. The Greenwave brought home the banner for 2005/06 season, as well in the 1983/84 and 1976/77 seasons.
