A message from South Shore Health

The Holidays should be a time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. By practicing safety at home work and at play, you can help prevent your celebration from turning to tragedy. The following are some simple tips to help you and your family enjoy a safe and healthy holiday and joyous New Year.

• Get your flu shot. It is the best was to prevent the Flu. • Check all carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to be sure they are in working order. • Take medications as directed. • Check your fire extinguisher to be sure that it is full and working properly. Make sure that everyone knows where it is and how to use it. • Never leave candles unattended. • Wash your hands often, and make sure your children do the same. Hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of infections. • Always wear an approved helmet when participating in activities such as downhill skiing, sledding, ATVing snowmobiling, snowboarding, skating or playing hockey. • Wear safety equipment at work and play. • Keep walkways clear of snow and ice. • Keep a safety kit in your car. We suggest you include a first aid kit, booster cables, gloves, hats, non-perishable snacks, blanket, candles and matches or lighter. • The holidays can be difficult for some people. Set realistic expectations for yourself and your family to avoid feelings of disappointment. Don't ignore signs of depression in someone around you. • Keep emergency phone numbers next to the telephone and make sure everyone knows where they are. • Please don't drink and drive.

The Board, Management and staff of South Shore Health wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy New Year.

Kevin McNamara,

CEO South Shore Health
