Sterling Belliveau will be returning as Shelburne County’s MLA in a big way after taking more than 55 per cent of the votes cast.

Belliveau who narrowly won the riding over PC Challenger Eddie Nickerson in 2006, easily outdistanced Nickerson this time around with 3844 votes compared to the PC candidate’s 1637 votes.

Liberal Party Candidate Darian Huskilson took third place with 1356 votes. Green Party Candidate Robin Smith had 101 votes.

Belliveau takes his place as part of Nova Scotia’s history with the election of the province’s first NDP government.

As of this writing the NDP were projected to form a majority government …the first since former premier John Hamm won a majority in 1999.

In neighboring Queens County, the NDP also reclaimed its seat with the election of Vicki Conrad.

In fact, the NDP took all five South Shore seats.

The Coast Guard will have complete election coverage including local reactions and poll by poll results in its print edition on Tuesday.
