Not only an insult, it’s an assault at taxpayer’s money

Letter to the Yarmouth Vanguard

Topics :
Yarmouth County , Port Maitland

I can’t agree more with all the letters to the editor in the last few weeks about the wasting of money for a new Municipality building.

It’s the same in Yarmouth and surrounding area as all over the world.

Some politicians and bureaucrats try to build there own MONUMENT with the taxpayers money.

One little difference is actually, in the rest of the world they can renovate, remodel and refurnish whole hospitals, office towers and government buildings without interruption of service or work.

When the renovations are professionally planned and done and the different working areas are sealed off from each other then the little inconveniences bothers nobody. This apparently would not work in Yarmouth where the municipal council argues the few months of inconveniences for the staff is a big burden and it is justified to waste the taxpayers’ money.

This is not only an insult to all taxpaying Yarmouth County residents; it is a direct assault at their money.

Taxes for some went up more then 150 per cent in the last 10 years.

Several writers suggested amalgamation of the municipalities would be a wise move and as I know it has been suggested for years. Companies merge so that they can save money, survive and

can use synergy. But of course that’s a whole other story where political power, influences and personal goals are involved. Then you can waste money that’s not yours, and after that you can argue now that all this money has been invested it makes no sense to change anything.

If the council would like to spend a little money it would be wise to hire an external independent consultant to study an amalgamation and bring up a plan and a budget to do so. If they would do so

then they do as elected for and work for us and not against us.

Wake up brave people of Yarmouth County, have no fear and call, e-mail and talk with your councillor.

By the way, why is nothing mentioned in the just arrived Municipal "Fall 2007 Newsletter" about the planned new building?

Max Krebser,

Port Maitland
