Fire chief Roy Mullen said the event would not be affected by the weather as the firefighters were in for a soaking regardless.
“Rain or shine—or even thunder—the Fun Day was a go for downtown Weymouth,” said Mullen. “It’s a wet event.”
Teams from fire departments in Digby, Digby Neck, Plympton and Gilbert’s Cove and Hammonds Plains competed with the host Weymouth team for the traditional barrel roll and bucket brigade trophies.
“A few of our members joined those teams who were short-handed,” said Mullen. “We’re always ready to pitch in and help one another. That’s the firemen’s way.”
Weymouth won the trophy for the barrel roll and Digby took the bucket brigade trophy, beating out the competition in just over two minutes.
The annual Fun Day not only provides friendly competition for members of different fire departments but is a fundraiser for the host department as well. Along with a barbecue and canteen, the Weymouth department held a silent auction.
Mullen said the day was very successful and was pleased with the community support in attending the event.
