Canada Day events at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts celebrated Canada’s diversity with outdoor visual arts workshops, live music, scavenger sketch hunts, African dance and drum, an international food fair, a lantern parade and spectacular fireworks.

Headlining the event was Cuban singer Frederick Mujica, born in Mayajigua, Mujica Cuba, now living in Nova Scotia, with additional musical performances by Mike Aube, Heather Kelday and Megan Lickley, George Symonds, Maurice Gave, Dennis Robinson and Jenn Melvin, James MacDonald, Mary’s Islanders, and the Atlantic Centre for African Dance.

Visual arts workshops included multicultural arts and crafts, fabric-dying, yarn-drawing, jewelry-making and mask- and lantern-making, storytelling with Laurie Noseworthy and a tell your story workshop led by Ella Tetrault and landscape painting with Fionualla Reynolds. “Ross Creek had a fabulous Canada Day, with over 25 volunteers of all ages from across the Valley and around the world and over 500 people in attendance. The day was supported by many local businesses, including the Superstore, Save-Easy, Noggins, Hennigars, Sobey’s, Wheels in Motion and Cochrane's Pharmasave,” said Executive Director Chris O’Neill.

The Medford Women’s Institute has increased its efforts to help promote “Buy Local” with a campaign to bring the Annapolis Valley’s first “Tailgate Farm Market” to be held at Oakview Farm on Longspell Road in Kingsport Thursdays evenings from 5-8 p.m.

The 2nd annual “Straw Hat, Antique Tractor and Machinery Display” will be held in Kingsport Saturday, July 4 (rain date July 5) at the home of Frank Woolaver starting at noon until dusk.

Forty-seven tractors were on display last year with an expected increase this year. There will be a cold plate lunch with strawberry shortcake, tea/coffee for $10. A BBQ and canteen will be onsite and music provided by the Kingsport Jammers and Friends.

The Pereaux Baptist Church will host a strawberry salad supper with ham and turkey salad Wednesday, July 8 from 4:30-7 p.m. Price is $10 adults and $5 for children aged 10 and under. Take-outs available.

Make the Canning Library part of your summer destination: Open Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed for lunch from 12:30-1:30. Also closed Sundays and Mondays.

Canning Library Book Club #6, Foul Deeds by Linda Moore, will be held Thursday, July 9 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. The author will be joining the group discussion and everyone will be meeting at the bandstand in Bruce Spicer Park if the weather is favorable.

The Rotary Clubs of the Annapolis Valley will host the Long Island Youth Orchestra benefit concert for local youth programs at Northeast Kings Educational Centre Friday, July 10 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from Cochrane’s Pharmacy’s in Canning, Wolfville or Hantsport, R.D. Chisholm’s in Kentville, Fritz’s in New Minas and Stage 11 in Port Williams for $10 for students or $15 for adults.

Let your creativity soar with summer adult art workshops at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts. Saturday workshops include painting the figure with Sara Hartland-Rowe and mixed media collage with Judith Leidl July 11; mono-printing and mixed media with Penny Ridley and digital photography with Andrew Danson July 25; photography with Andrew Danson, and poetry and prose with Carole Langille Aug. 8; felted sculpture with Anne Pickard Aug. 22.

Experimental photographic imaging with Ryan Buckley and singing/songwriting with Laura Smith to be confirmed.

With a phenomenal faculty for five teen academies, they will make up some of the best summer programs for teens in Canada, with instructors in visual arts, writing, theatre, graphic novel and film with such luminaries as Melody Johnson, award-winning actress and Second City alumnus, and Ken Schwartz, award-winning Director of Two Planks and a Passion Theatre.

Blood collection clinics are held at Canning Pharmasave Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors’ day is the last Thursday of the month.

Seniors’ group meets Wednesdays from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Canning Lions Hall. New members aged 55-plus are welcome to join with an annual $5 fee. Contact Rose at 582-7346 for details.

Canning Walkers meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 9 a.m. at the Glooscap School parking lot. Contact Susan at 582-1529 for details.

Lions Club Bingo every Saturday evening at 7:15 p.m. at the Canning Lions Hall. There is a canteen available, free tea and coffee to players, $500 jackpot to go each week, and regular games of $100. Contact George at 582-3023 for details. Everyone welcome.
