In the office of Tabitha Centre last Friday, Ann Louise Doucet was on the phone with someone in need of help – or more specifically, in need of beds.

The help the outreach organization can offer. The beds, though, are a little harder to come by. Doucet – a supervisor and assessment coordinator for Tabitha Centre – says they are in dire need of beds that they can give to the public. And you might as well add couches and dining room chairs to the list too. There was only one of each at the centre on Queen Street on June 26.

Doucet says Tabitha Centre has seen an increase in the number of people coming through their doors seeking help. And there has been an increase of items going out.

Whether this has anything to do with the recent situation in town where many people have been evicted or displaced from their homes because their landlords have been unable to keep up with their bills is not clear to Doucet. “I think what we do is kind of crossing over with what is going on in the town,” she said. “We certainly have people from the backlash of the apartment situation in here, and we’ve increased what we’ve been given out, but I don’t know for sure whether the two are connected all of the time.”

Tabitha Centre is running low on items like beds, couches, pots and pans and towels and sheets. Tabitha Centre is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon and anyone who has these items to donate can drop them off at the Queen Street location. (The centre is located in the basement of the youth centre building, in space formerly occupied by Gateway Bowling Lanes.)

Donations would be greatly appreciated and if people have larger items, like furniture, that they need help transporting they can call 902-742-8960.
