It was great to have Port Williams Days span the whole weekend this year.

Over $1,000 was earned by the Lions at their Mock Jail Friday, June 12. The rain held off during the busy yard sales Saturday while the breeze wafted the aroma of the firefighters deliciously cooking barbecued chicken up and down the street and over to the library’s used book sale.

Hungry yard-salers could also snack or lunch at the Lions canteen in the Stage 2 parking lot or at the Park Committee canteen on the lawn of the Steele apartments on Main St. The PWP canteen’s cotton candy was especially popular with the children.

Across from the Port Williams Park canteen, Porter's Farm Market had a tent. Many people were drawn to it by the piano artistry of Lucas Porter, who performed throughout the morning and stayed to view the local food choices that the new market (located on Belcher St.), becoming known for its variety of pork products, has for sale.

It was almost miraculous that the sun came out in time for the children’s parade, which was led by one of our fire trucks. There were two princess floats in our children’s parade: our own and Kingston’s. It was like an Apple Blossom Festival reunion as a number of princesses came to our parade riding on the two floats. Afterwards they passed out treat bags and talked to the children.

Many Size Small children and parents participated in the parade celebrating 15 years of the popular local nursery school. There were also two girls driving pony carts, some Shriners' clowns and cyclists, and Cruisers from both Magic 94.9 and AVR and Sparky the firedog on a Kentville Fire Department truck.

The Port Pub float had the clown from the morning's Children's Fair entertaining everyone with his juggling followed by young members of a local Tae Kwon Do club.

Many people stayed after the parade to watch the Tae Kwon Do demonstration behind the Community Centre

A welcome addition to the day’s activities was the children’s fair at the Port Pub Saturday morning in support of Camp Brigadoon. Children could do a craft, play in the bouncer, participate in a duck race, talk with a clown and ballerinas and play games like skatter ball, hole-in-one. There was also lemonade and a BBQ.

Many people attended the community supper, where the Lions ran the kitchen and served the food while Princess Port Williams presided at the freewill offering.

I know that hockey fans were happy that weather delayed the fireworks until Saturday night. It was a beautiful, clear night and the fireworks were excellent. I heard they could be seen from White Rock.

I’m leaving my coverage of the Renovator’s House Tour until next week. There are many photos of the weekend’s events in the Village Photo Gallery on the Village website www.portwilliams.com.

On Tues., July 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Lockwood Hall of the Baptist Church, there will be a community wedding shower for Sharon Churchill and Steve Roe.
