Close to a dozen years ago a group of horticulturists began planting magnolia trees in the Town of Annapolis Royal and surrounding area. Jamie Ellison, Pat Pelham and their small crew of helpers could only envision the beauty of the 100+ trees they planted at that time, but their efforts are now being appreciated by all who visit this historic hamlet.

Annapolis Royal town council resurrected a group to continue the original planter’s efforts two years ago, educating, beautifying, and working on extending the shoulder season.

From May 8 - 17 the town will host its 2nd annual 'Celebrate the Magnolias of Annapolis Royal' event.

On May 9, the Historic Gardens and three local gardens will be open by donation: Barb and Rollo MacDonald's gardens in town, along with Karen Tomasino, and Marianne Lawrence on Granville Road. Beth Gartland (Newman's restaurant) and Marilyn Lawson (Just Desserts Kings Theatre events) will be serving sweet treats at the latter location.

At 7 p.m., John Weigle is tentatively booked to share Captain Steele's presentation at the Historic Gardens Interpretive Centre ($10).

On Sunday, May 10, Jill Covill is hosting Jodi DeLong as a guest speaker at Bunchberry Nursery from 2 - 4 p.m. The town comes alive the weekend of the 15th with museums, the Historic Gardens, and the market opening.

The Atlantic Rhododendron & Horticultural Society will be holding its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 9, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the LeMarchant - St. Thomas School gymnasium, 6141 Watt St. in Halifax.

The Society will have over 35 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas available in pot sizes ranging from 4" to 3 gallon - all at reasonable prices. This year’s selection will include many of the latest super-hardy hybrids from Finland. Knowledgeable members will be on hand to help you make your selections and to answer any questions you may have about growing these beautiful shrubs.

There will also be a good selection of other nursery grown, new, unusual and rare plants ranging from trees to perennials as well as plants donated by members. This is great opportunity to look over and acquire many plants that are not commonly available.

A descriptive list of many of the plants will be available on the ARHS website (www.atlanticrhodo.org) one week before the sale. For more information contact D. Evers at (902) 835-2586 or devers@eastlink.ca.
