Important, valuable for youth to recognize Remembrance

They are the heirs of those who served and sacrificed for Canada, and it’s important for them to be part of the Remembrance tradition.

Members of the Kings County Army Cadets have been part of the Remembrance Day observances in Kentville for years, taking part in the parade and the Poppy Campaign.

Kings Branch Royal Canadian Legion sponsors the corps.

Corps senior Cadet Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Todd Everett, who will be helping place the corps’ wreath at the Kentville cenotaph, said, “it is important and valuable for this generation to recognize the soldiers who served and who died for Canada.” He noted, “we’re among the best suited organizations to do this because of the close connection with the military.”

Everett has been in cadets for five years and plans to embark on a military career when he completes his education, possibly in the artillery.

Cadet WO Tysha Wilmott also will be one of the cadets placing the wreath for the corps at the cenotaph. “I do it every year,” she said. “As the senior female in the corps, I really enjoy doing that. It’s hard to explain.”

She has been in the cadets for five years and plans to become a veterinarian as a profession. She said the cadet experience has helped her prepare for many facets of life.

Cadet Pte. Mark Houghton agreed, “it’s really important to show respect for the sacrifices of those who served and died.” They preserved the country’s freedoms and “without that, a lot of what we do wouldn’t be possible.” He also plans to begin a military career in the future.

The Legion has been working to inform youth of Remembrance for many years, including sponsoring cadet groups as well as visits to schools and the annual Call to Remembrance quiz program.

This is in addition to long-time Legion youth sports and leadership programs.
