YFD VETERAN DIES

Hook and Ladder veteran, and the company’s former captain, Archie LeBlanc died at home last Tuesday, Aug. 26.

A service was held at Huskilson’s Funeral Home on Aug. 30. Our sincere sympathy to Sharon and family.

THANK YOU

The Eel Brook and District Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank Lake Vaughan and West Pubnico Fire Departments for their help in fighting a house fire in Lower Eel Brook, Wednesday, August 13th. The departments were on scene for two and a half hours. Two of the occupants were transported to Yarmouth Hospital for observation over night and released the following morning. The fire was contained to one upstairs bedroom.

The Eel Brook and District Volunteer Fire Department would also like to thank Yarmouth, West Pubnico and Lake Vaughan for responding to the accident on Highway 103 on the morning of August 23rd. Departments were on scene for two and a half hours, cleaning the highway and traffic control.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Our best wishes to Salvage vet Edgar LeBlanc, whose birthday was celebrated Monday, Sept. 1. This special day was number 84.

VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER RETIRES

After 30 years with the Lake Vaughan Fire Department, Bill Mc Lachlan has decided to retire. Bill is one of the original members. A get together at their fire station took place last Saturday evening with a pot luck supper and the presentation of a certificate of appreciation. Congratulations “Uncle Bill” and thank you for your many years of dedication to the department and fire service.

DEPUTY CHIEF HONOURED

We are very pleased to mention that YFD deputy chief John Wainwright was honored for serving 25 years with the Maritime Fire Chiefs.

DATE IN HISTORY

Sept. 7, 1955 – An 11 p.m. alarm kept the Yarmouth Fire Department busy until daylight for a fire that destroyed the Brown’s Market building on Main Street, located where the Centennial swimming pool is now located. Lost in the blaze were two stores, a dentist’s office, a hat shop and one upstairs apartment. Following a roof cave in, firefighters were moved back onto the street as the front brick wall had moved and was in danger of collapsing.
