Dear Editor:

What is a young person to do in Cornwallis Park? So far the list of things we are not allowed to do has increased from hanging out in large groups, to playing road hockey, and now we are no longer allowed to play live music in our backyards. Cornwallis Park includes people of all ages, and is not a retirement community. However, the older people who live in the area have come to regard it as such, thus young people are forced into silence.

Understandably, our band was loud, but involving the RCMP was not necessary. If the elderly people in the neighborhood had a problem with our music, why were we not approached, instead of a noise complaint being filed? I fear this has gone on long enough. Since the park was opened in 1997, it has been plagued by reports of young people behaving in ways not suitable for the public. Could this be the reason for it? Has it come to the point that so many complaints about typical young people entertainment (garage bands, road hockey, hanging out on a Friday night) has led to this behavior? I think enough’s enough. We’re not hurting anyone.
