Firefighters worthy of our greatest respect

To the Editor:

I believe that we all too often take things for granted. We are all busy with a multitude of tasks everyday and when we hear of an unfortunate incident, we pause and consider it for a moment then move on, thinking that although it was unfortunate, it wouldn’t happen to me.

But when it does, it causes one to reflect on the impact it has on so many people. The recent fire that destroyed Sherdon Place in New Minas is a case in point. Although fortunately no one was hurt, the fire destroyed the building, two businesses, caused employee layoffs and upset many customers and clients throughout the community. However, the people that may be overlooked are the volunteer firefighters who are quick to respond to such an incident.

While many think it may be just their job, I couldn’t help but think as I watched the flames and members of the New Minas, Wolfville, Port Williams, Kentville, Greenwich and Waterville fire departments and the Rapid Intervention Team from the Windsor/Hantsport/Brooklyn departments going about their business on the scene that they have volunteered their time and gave up work and family commitments in order to fight the fire and clean up long after the fire is extinguished for the benefit of others and the community. Not only this occasion, but every time there is a fire or other incident that requires their attention and efforts.

We should have the greatest respect for the volunteers, who, at times, risk their own safety attempting to save property which is not their own.

Sincerely

Rick and Susan Escott
