Hantsport’s mayor and council have been researching the dissolution issue for more than a year. They have behaved admirably and openly in sharing information and involving the citizenry. They have been well planned and transparent throughout the entire process.

On April 16, they made the right decision to proceed with dissolution of town status. Hantsport will remain even more alive and well because of this.

Hantsport is transitioning from a company town to a residential and service-oriented one for the region. It’s a lovely community that is close to transportation, recreation, shopping and many other services in the region, not just in the town.

As a new kind of residential and service-oriented town, Hantsport needs new ideas and new people to be sustainable. In reducing the risk of higher taxes and integrating with other communities in the region, Hantsport’s mayor and council are doing what smart communities in the global economy do — reduce the cost of operating and expand markets beyond borders. More new residents paying more taxes will move to the town. More service enterprises focused on serving the region and beyond will establish here.

Congratulations to Hantsport’s mayor and council for being strategic and smart and for taking the long view on this important issue.
