The end of 1938

And so 2013 and my columns regarding 1938 come to a close.  Not to worry though, 1939 will be next as I enjoy taking the occasional peek into the past and feel that 75 years back is a great time to explore.

Some of the major events to happen in 1938 include Canada changing labour regulations relating to minors, oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia, Superman was created, Howard Hughs breaks world records with a flight around the world, and Walt Disney releases the first ever full length animated film – Snow White.

Most importantly though, the Nazi regime was in power and already starting to pressure other countries, some such as Austria, give in.  The regime had also already started the persecution of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other groups deemed undesirable.  Though most of the world did not know about the rounding up of these groups, pressure was already being put on other countries to react to the threat of other countries. 

War is declared on Germany in 1939 and reading ads and stories pertaining to that period will provide us with an interesting perspective.  Although it is a terrible time in the history of the world, I think we will get interesting perspective in reading about the plight of those alive in that period and we will get a
